Origins and physico-chemical properties of diverse igneous rocks are studied. Emphasis is given on the genesis, classification, mineralogical and geochemical compositions, phase equilibria, and geotectonic environments of igneous rocks. Topics include laboratory practices on the identification and descriptions of igneous rocks and important rock-forming minerals.
EAES 203 GEOCHEMISTRY [3]
Application of chemical principles on mobility and partitioning of Earth-forming elements to diverse geologic processes such as rock formation and weathering is studied. Topic includes the cosmochemistry; composition, origin, evolution, and cycles of Earth-forming materials; earth thermodynamics; geochronology; and fractionation and application of stable isotopes.
EAES 204 GEOPHYSICS [3]
An introduction to principles and applications of geophysics in evaluating the internal structure, dynamics, and bulk properties of the Earth. Topics include gravitational field and geodesy, magnetic field and paleomagnetism, earthquake seismology, and heat flow of the Earth. Global tectonics (plate tectonics) of the Earth are studied in light of constraints from the various geophysical data.
EAES 205 ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY [3]
To understand physical and chemical properties of the atmosphere, and urgent environmental issues caused by changes in atmospheric compositions such as global warming, stratospheric ozone depletion, acid deposition, and degradation of air quality.
EAES 206 AQUEOUS GEOCHEMISTRY [3]
Geochemical processes that govern the chemistry and quality of natural waters. Emphasis on the hydrologic cycle and water-rock interactions; geochemical reactions that control the hydrogeochemistry; water quality change by natural and anthropogenic contamination; and the use of environmental isotope_data. Includes diverse laboratory practices on low-temperature geochemistry.
EAES 207 HYDROGEOLOGY [3]
Origin and occurrence of groundwater is investigated through hydrological cycle of water, soil water flow in vadose zone, groundwater flow in aquifer zone, their governing equations as well as the methods of estimating associated parameters in the equations.
EAES 208 OCEANOGRAPHY [3]
This course is designed to understand physical, chemical, geological, and biological properties of the ocean. Examples from current researches using research vessels and satellites are routinely used. The role of ocean in global and local scale changes such as El Nino and global warming is emphasized.
EAES 301 STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY [3]
This course provides the basic knowledge of structural geology that includes geometric understanding of deformed structures, introductory level of theory, and application of continuum mechanics. It also deals with kinetic interpretation of structures at an outcrop scale and the synthesis of structures at a regional scale.
EAES 302 TECTONICS [3]
Plate kinematics, plate boundaries, plate motion through time, and driving mechanisms are the primary topics of this course. Structural geology, petrology, stratigraphy, and geophysics of plate margins such as compressional mountain belts, passive margins, mid-oceanic ridges and transform faults are reviewed throughout the course.
EAES 303 GEOPHYSICAL EXPLORATION [3]
Geophysical techniques used to determine subsurface structures, presence and extent of the ore deposits, fossil fuel as well as applications in geotechnical engineering are covered. Topics include gravity, magnetics, refraction and reflection seismology, electric and electromagnetic methods, and well logging. Practical measurements, interpretation, and applications of various geophysical exploration techniques are also considered.
EAES 304 MINERAL AND ENERGY RESOURCES [3]
This course provides the modern basic knowledge on metallic mineral and energy resources. The occurrence, mineralogy and genetic environments of various types of ore deposits and related geodynamics are studied.

EAES 306 ENVIRONMENTAL GEOPHYSICS [3]
Applications of geophysical techniques to near-surface environmental and engineering problems such as environmental site characterization, protection of soil and groundwater from contamination and shallow geological investigations. Techniques include magnetic, electric, electromagnetic, georadar, seismic, gravity, geothermometry, well logging, and radioactivity methods. Case histories are included.
EAES 307 SEDIMENTARY SYSTEMS [3]
This course is designed to cover the basic principles of sedimentary geology, which provide a basic understanding on the variety of depositional systems on the Earth. Emphasis is given how to identify and describe wide variety of sedimentary rocks and understanding and interpretation of their genesis.
EAES 308 GROUNDWATER AND ENVIRONMENT [3]
Physico-chemical characteristics of groundwater and principles related to groundwater contamination, e.g., transport of contaminants in aquifer and geochemical characteristics of groundwater are studied.
EAES 309 ENVIRONMENTAL SOIL SCIENCE [3]
Fundamental principles of physico-chemical soil properties, transport characteristics of organic and inorganic chemicals and various mechanisms associated with soil contamination, such as attenuation, sorption, desorption, and degradation of soil contaminants are studied.

EAES 401 FIELD GEOLOGY AND PRACTICE [3]
This course covers all aspects of field geology including igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary, and structural geology. Key emphasis is given to train students to correctly identify and describe rocks, geologic structures and systematic recording of field data. The course includes a final field project where students are required to collect and interpret field data for completion of a geologic map and final report.
EAES 402 GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING [3]

Contaminants migration in both vadose and aquifer zones are investigated in micro- and macro-scales, and associated hydraulic and geochemical modeling techniques are studied.
EAES 407 GLOBAL ELEMENTS CYCLE [3]
Biogeochemical cycles of major elements such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, sulfur, and halogens are studied, and their impacts on the Earth's environmental changes are discussed.
EAES 408 REMOTE SENSING AND GIS [3]
Study on the basic principles and geologic-geophysical applications of remote sensing techniques and on the processing techniques of remotely sensed data for applications to earth resources exploration, environmental pollution surveys, and land use management.

EAES 423 PLANETARY GEOLOGY [3]
In this course, we aim to explore planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and recently discovered exoplanets. Using the results observed through recent space telescopes, such as the James Webb telescope, we seek to understand the internal structure of various types of planets, ranging from rocky planets to giant gas planets. Additionally, we will delve into the formation of planets and moons through collisions.
